Schwahn, Dees All-Conference

Explosive plays and spectacular catches led to an improved junior campaign for Powell High School wide receiver Trey Stenerson, who earned All-State honors for the first time in his football career.

In addition to football, Stenerson has seen success recently on the diamond, earning second team All-State honors in 2021 along with a first team All-State selection this past summer.

“It was an honor to receive these awards in baseball and football,” Stenerson said. “It’s considered an individual award, but I almost see it as a team award because I couldn’t have achieved it without my coaches and teammates.”

Throughout the season Stenerson helped the Panthers through explosive plays, including a 74-yard touchdown in the quarterfinal matchup with Douglas.

Overall for the season Stenerson finished second in a lot of categories in the state.

His 813 yards and 54 receptions ranked second and his 10 touchdowns were tied for the second most in the state.

“I don’t really focus on all the stats and numbers,” Stenerson said. “I just go out there and try my best on each play. Hopefully, my contributions lead to success for the team.”

Alongside Stenerson on the 3A West All-Conference team were junior teammates Jhett Schwahn at quarterback and Jimmy Dees on the defensive line.

At quarterback, Schwahn finished with the fifth most passing yards in the state with 1,612, while finishing tied for the third most touchdowns with 14.

The bond between Schwahn and Stenerson has been prominent in the duo’s success on and off the field, continuing to build a friendship that has existed since elementary school.

“Jhett and I have been teammates since third grade,” Stenerson said. “We are the best of friends on and off the field. We’ve grown a strong bond over the years and when one of us succeeds, we both succeed.”

Stenerson and Schwahn will continue to use that bond moving forward into the winter, with the Panther basketball team trying to build on a successful 2021 season.

On the defensive line, Dees finished with 28.5 tackles on the season with three sacks in his second season playing on the Panther defensive line that ranked second in the state in rush defense.

Defensively the Panthers allowed only 102.2 yards per game rushing and tied for the fewest touchdowns given up in the state at 10 with Cody.

Dees will look to carry his momentum onto the wrestling mat this winter.

Despite earning All-State honors this year, Stenerson said he knows there is room for improvement moving forward.

“There’s always room for improvement and lots of areas to get better,” he said. “Specifically, I would like to improve my speed and strength leading into my senior year.”
