The Wyoming State Board of Education (SBE) will meet in Powell today (Thursday) and Friday for its annual retreat and June meeting. Both gatherings are open to the public and will be held in Room 100 of the new Northwest College Student Center.

Thursday’s retreat will be dedicated to strategic planning and setting the board's direction for the next year. Members will engage in focused discussions on standards, assessment, accountability and accreditation with breakout sessions to prioritize tasks in each area.

On Friday, the board will tour Powell High School and Northwest College Career & Technical Education programs. The SBE will then convene its regular meeting at 9:30 a.m.

The board will receive updates, including consideration for the promulgation of Chapter 31 Graduation Requirements and Chapter 10 Content and Performance Standards, including World Language & Cultures, Extended Math, and Extended Science standards.

The Wyoming Department of Education will present accreditation recommendations for public schools, excluding state-authorized public charter schools. Additionally, the board will receive annual reports from all public charter schools.

Agendas and materials and agendas for the two days of meetings are available online at go.boarddocs.com/wy/wyos/Board.nsfon. For more information — including on how to join the meeting via Zoom — visit wyboardofeducation.org/meetings/.

There are 14 state board members, including Chairman Bill Lambert, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Megan Degenfelder, Director of Wyoming Community College Commission Ben Moritz, a University of Wyoming representative and 10 volunteers appointed by Gov. Mark Gordon. The appointees include former educator and lawmaker RJ Kost of Powell.
