Hitting the fairways for the first time since September, the Panther golf team went to Worland on Friday, April 8, and played its first round in a shortened spring season.
In the spring season, golfers play only one round total and do not have a state championship at its conclusion.
A warm day with little wind greeted the Panthers for their first action, as freshman Trey Scott led the way for Powell.
Scott finished with a 94. Coach Troy Hildebrand said Scott continues to grow and will be a key part of the program moving forward.
“That is a solid round for Trey this early in the year. He is only going to get better as he continues to grow and sees these courses again as he moves through his career,” Hildebrand said. “He will play a lot this summer, and he will be an important piece of our team as we move into the fall.”
Just behind Scott were sophomore Andrew Jones and junior Seth Seibert, who tied for the Panthers at 98.
Hildebrand said both of the athletes had strong performances overall, but they did not have success in their short game. He said that with improving conditions throughout the season, he expects their short game to improve.
Next up for the Panthers was freshman Jackson Hill, who posted a career best tournament round of 106.
“He is a player that is hungry to improve, and he has made great strides since last August,” Hildebrand said. “It was great to see him get his spring off on a positive note.”
Rounding out the scores for the Panthers was sophomore Sam Johnston, finishing with a 133.
Hildebrand said that Johnston is a newer player overall to golf, but he is making great strides.
“He is fairly new to golf still and being able to just relax and trust himself is the next big step for Sam [Johnston],” he said.
The second opportunity for the Panthers to hit the course in Thermopolis – on Thursday, April 14 – was canceled due to inclement weather.
The team’s next outing is scheduled for this Friday in Buffalo, but that event is also dependent on weather.
