Slow start, mistakes doom PHS football

An early season road test proved too tough for the Powell football team on Friday, as the Panthers fell to the Worland Warriors 28-7.

The problems started early for the Panthers (1-1), when Worland (1-0) found an explosive play on the first third down of the game.

Worland quarterback Kade Weber found Brock Douzenis on the sideline who made the catch over Trey Stenerson’s outreached hands, and raced up the sideline for a 62-yard touchdown just 1:03 into the game.

“Trey Stenerson was inches away from picking that ball, and you never know how the momentum shifts if we got that,” Panther football coach Chase Kistler said. “Football is a game of momentum, he went for it and he went to ground and did not have a chance to make a tackle  — giving them all the momentum early on.”

Powell was unable to find anything on its first drive after a miscommunication along the line for blocking, forcing an early punt.

The Panthers had a successful punt, but off-setting penalties forced Powell to punt the ball again.

A bad snap led to a poor punt, giving Worland possession in Powell territory.

“To me, we kind of beat ourselves most of the time,” Kistler said.

Luck was on Powell’s side this time, as the Warriors fumbled on the next play.

Neither team got any momentum the rest of the quarter, leaving the score at 7-0 going into the second quarter.

Powell had an opportunity in Worland territory, facing a fourth down inside the 30 yard line.

The Panthers converted the play, but an ineligible man downfield brought the play back.

After the penalty, Powell failed to complete the fourth down conversion — giving the ball back to Worland.

A quick drive boosted by a late hit out of bounds resulted in another touchdown pass to Douzenis from 18 yards out.

Powell tried to mount a drive heading into halftime, but Panther quarterback Jhett Schwahn’s pass was intercepted by Douzenis, who returned it 75 yards for a touchdown — making it 21-0.

“We are trying to throw the ball more, we are trying to press the issue more but we just need to find a happy medium to where teams are not loading the box and we are still able to run the ball,” Kistler said.

Powell attempted one more drive before the half, but Schwahn was intercepted again to keep it 21-0 at halftime.

A new focus helped the Panthers early in the second half, putting together a strong initial drive.

Senior running back Steven Stambaugh capped off the 70-yard drive that took nearly eight minutes.

Sophomore running back Cody Seifert injured his shoulder during the drive — sidelining him for the remainder of the contest.

After the touchdown, another mistake cost Powell field position after a kick out of bounds.

Worland put together another touchdown drive capped off by Douzenis, making it 28-7.

Powell battled in the fourth quarter, but more turnovers stopped any chance of a late comeback.

“After the game I told them it was good that this happened to us early,” Kistler said. “It shows us we have a long way to go, we are not as good as we thought because we beat Riverton that bad.”

The Panthers now return home this week, taking on another non-conference matchup with Lander making its way to Panther Stadium on Friday.

Kistler said that he wants his team to focus on consistency this week, while bringing energy to each and every snap while focusing on fundamentals.

This will be the Panther’s only home game before heading out on a two week road trip before returning for homecoming on Sept. 30.

The Lander game is set to kick off at 7 p.m.

Powell Valley Healthcare will join the Powell Athletic Roundtable for a tailgate fundraiser prior to the game starting at 6 p.m.

A meal will be provided for $7, with raffle tickets for prizes also being sold. All proceeds will go towards Panther athletics.
