Going into the holiday shopping season, the national headlines can be alarming: Inflation has surged to a 30-year high, while the global supply chain crisis continues to impact businesses across America.

But for retailers, there’s also good news: Americans are shopping more than ever, and the National Retail Federation says holiday spending in 2021 could shatter previous records. The association forecasts sales in November and December will grow up to 10.5% from last year, with a chief economist saying, “the outlook for the holiday season looks very bright.”

We hope the national trend proves true in our community, but in order for small businesses to enjoy a successful holiday season, residents must shop locally.

A good time to start is during Sample the Season from 5-7 p.m. Thursday. The annual event ushers in Powell’s holiday shopping season, as local businesses offer treats and holiday specials. While sipping cider and enjoying cookies, it’s a great time to purchase gifts on your Christmas list.

Small Business Saturday follows on Nov. 27, and we hope the momentum to support our local economy continues throughout the holiday season.

By supporting small businesses, you’re helping ensure they can keep their doors open — and that they can give back to the community, too. Local stores and restaurants often step up to support youth in 4-H, FFA, athletics and other activities. Whenever there’s a fundraiser for a resident facing high medical bills or other struggles, area businesses donate to the cause. This holiday season, you can show your gratitude by shopping locally.

When the world shut down in early 2020 as the novel coronavirus started spreading, retailers and restaurants faced an uncertain future. Thankfully, not only did many local businesses survive, new ones opened. Launching a new venture is an impressive feat any year, but especially so during a global pandemic. If you haven’t visited Powell’s new shops, now’s the perfect time to stop by.

When you walk or drive around downtown Powell, there are few empty storefronts. As a community, we can be proud of the hardworking business owners who have risen to the challenges of the past two years. Our vibrant downtown is also a testament to the residents who remain committed to spending their dollars in their community.

The hardships and challenges in recent years have underscored the fact that we’re all in this together — that’s especially true in a rural community like ours. Let’s show small businesses we care by shopping locally this holiday season.
