School district employees to see a nearly 1% pay increase

Due to budget increases and a continued rise in cost of living, Park County School District 1 has voted to increase employee salaries for the 2023-2024 school year.

“We all have been made aware that there were two things that occurred to our budget this year, for next year,” Superintendent Jay Curtis said. “Number one, that an increase in the number of ADM (average daily membership) and number two, the Legislature passed external cost adjustment to multiple components in the model, the impact of those and a few other minor things that occurred in the model resulted in about a $2 million increase in our budget.”

Curtis reminded the board that due to “unprecedented inflation,” salaries were drastically increased last year, but increasing inflation and additional money added to the budget allows the district to increase base salaries. Retaining and recruiting quality staff, the availability of which is declining both within the state and nationally, was also a motivating factor.

PCSD1 teachers’ base salary has been increased by $500 which is equal to a 0.97% increase. Along with certified staff, non-teaching certified staff, speech/occupational/physical therapy staff, psychologists, building administration, district administration and support and professional non-certified staff all received increases. That raises the base teacher salary to $51,500, while building administration will see a salary increase from $87,760 to $88,315. District administration salaries will be increased from $104,580 to 105,285.

Changes will also be made to steps and lanes, which are contracted additions to an employee’s base salary determined on the amount of years the individual has worked and their level of education. All certified staff, support staff and professional non-certified staff will receive two additional steps. Building administrators and district level administration will receive annual step increases.

This budget is preliminary and final budget amounts will be voted on by the board on July 19.
