A nearly six-hour journey to Montana State University Northern in Havre, Montana, led to a series of highs and lows for the NWC Rodeo team last weekend.
The men’s team placed fifth for the second weekend in a row, scoring 95 points as a team.
Highlights for the Trappers included William Hunter Hughes winning the bull riding with a score of 73, and Taggart Hammons placing second as a team roping heeler. Hughes also placed sixth in all-around and eighth in team roping heeler.
“I was very happy and impressed with Hughes and Hammons,” coach Del Nose said.
Other breakthroughs including Paden Woolstenhulme placing fourth in steer wrestling.
“We had some mental mistakes again, it is tough to get the freshman out of the high school mode for riding,” Nose said.
He said most of the reasons they were unable to score as high was due to mental mistakes and not due to talent or performances, as mental mistakes such as breaking barriers early led to penalties against the Trappers.
On the women’s side, the team also placed fifth with a point total of 25. Hailey Anna Davis was the only top placer, coming in seventh in goat tying.
DAWSON RODEO
The team traveled to the Dawson Community College Rodeo Sept. 17-18, with the men placing fifth with a total score of 160 points.
Woolstenhulme placed seventh in men’s all-around, sixth in tie-down roping and sixth in steer wrestling.
Other placers included Logan Smith taking fifth in tie down, Cole Biggers placing fourth in saddle bronc and Hughes finishing ninth in team roping heeler.
Overall for the season, the men’s team dropped one spot from fourth to fifth in the region with a total of 834 points. The women’s team is sixth in the region with 25 points.
Those in the top 10 in the region include: Hughes, who’s in a tie for No. 1 in the region for bull riding; Woolstenhulme, who’s No. 3 in steer wrestling and team roping header; Hagen Wallace is third in team roping heeler; Hammons is No. 8 in heeler; and Smith is No. 8 in tie-down roping.
The NWC team will look to improve from the past two weeks of the season, as they head to Dillon, Montana, this weekend to take part in the University of Montana Western Rodeo.
