Pro-life billboard vandalized in Cody area

Posted

A vandal or vandals spray painted an obscene message over an anti-abortion billboard north of Cody last week.

The sign, put up by Park County Right to Life, prominently says, “Save the Babies,” over an image of an infant. However, someone used green spray paint to write, “F— the babies,” with the expletive spelled out, plus some smiley faces.

The damage was reported to the Park County Sheriff’s Office around 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, July 22.

While a deputy responded and documented the damage, “nobody has any idea who did it,” said Sheriff Scott Steward, adding that he’s “never amazed at this job, the idiots.”

The sign is located about 8 miles north of Cody along Wyo. Highway 120.

Given its height above the ground, “somebody was really intent on doing it,” said Leslie Maslak, the past president of Park County Right to Life.

Although the pro-life group has a half-dozen signs around the area, and has had them for years, Maslak believed this was the first one to be vandalized.

“It’s kind of shocking,” she said. “You don’t expect it, because it’s a nice sign; it’s not offensive. I don’t know; I just don’t get it.”

The other text on the sign said that fetuses have a measurable heartbeat at 18 days and lists a phone number for ProLife Across America, which operates a hotline to encourage pregnant women to choose options other than abortion.

Maslak said Park County Right to Life plans to replace the sign — which had been up for about a year — but will need to raise the money to do so. The sheriff’s office estimated the damage at $300 to $400.

“Right now the case is just pending any further information,” Steward said.
