Powell swim finishes regular season on top

Another weekend, another dominant performance from the Powell High School girls’ swimming and diving team. What else is new?

The Panthers sailed to a win at the Powell tri meet on Thursday, earning 479 team points — 149 more than second-place Cody. The home event marked the Panthers’ final competition of the 2020 regular season.

Of the 13 events on hand, PHS took five first place finishes. The winners were Addison Moretti (200 free), Emma Karhu (1-meter 11 dives), Lucia Harder (500 free), Grace Sapp (100 back) and Elizabeth Liggett (100 breaststroke).

Aubree Fisher and Kathryn Brence became the team’s 20th and 21st state qualifiers, both posting sufficient times in the 100 breaststroke.

Powell also notched 30 personal-best times at the event. Wearing a tech suit, Elizabeth Liggett had three personal bests, with improvements in the 200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke and 50 free relay leadoff. Her time of 2:20.06 in the individual medley improved her spot on the PHS wall of fame from fifth to third.

Six other swimmers — Kathryn Brence, Taylor Dye, Croix Tryon, Dakota Hansen, Aubree Fisher and Colette Sanders — recorded double personal bests.

At the event, PHS honored its four seniors: Liggett, Moretti, Karhu and Madison Lowery. This group has made a significant impact on the program over the last four years.

“Each of these athletes has made a huge contribution to our team, gradually working hard in practice to achieve state finalist status,” head coach Bob Smartt said. “They will be greatly missed.”

The Panthers finished the regular season 12-1 and 8-1 in quad meets. They will take the pool next on Friday in Lander, when they compete in the conference meet. The event will begin at 4 p.m.
