Powell student recovering steadily from crash

Posted

High school student Nora Hart was taking a scenic detour home on April 23 — as she often enjoyed doing — when she became distracted by something and rolled her vehicle multiple times at milepost 4 near Kamm’s Corner.

She was ejected from the vehicle and found by a medical student. Hart was taken by helicopter to Billings.  Following brain surgery to reduce pressure caused by swelling, Hart has been steadily improving, and she is now responsive and joking with staff.

Hart, a junior at the Shoshone Learning Center, had been working hard to graduate this May and enlist in the U.S. Army soon after. She had planned to work over the summer and take classes at Northwest College until she was old enough to enlist.

“We have a little bit of a military family,” said Amy Hart, Nora’s mother. “ I was in the military a little bit before she was born and my significant other is military.”

Amy said that after Nora attended the Wyoming Cowboy Challenge last year, she developed a love for “the routine and camaraderie there [in the military].”

Nora’s other hobbies include hunting, fishing and “anything outdoors” her mother said.

A GoFundMe page was established to help the Hart family meet Nora’s medical expenses, but for Amy, the GoFundMe page is more about keeping family, friends and the community updated on Nora’s progress. Her GoFundMe has raised $5,855 — surpassing the original goal of $5,000. Although Amy is concerned about the money, she just wants to have a place where people can see how Nora is doing. She consistently posts updates, including photos and videos that highlight the determination Nora is known for.

“She is a very outgoing, determined young lady,” Amy said.

Staff at Powell High School also collected money for Nora through a blue jean fundraiser, a longtime staple in the Park County School District for community members in need. As of press time,  $330 had been raised.

Once Nora is released from the intensive care unit, she will most likely go to pediatric care before going to Craig Hospital, an Englewood, Colorado, rehabilitation facility for people suffering from spinal cord and brain injuries.

“I want our community to know we appreciate everything they’ve done and continue to do — whether it’s time or prayers or monetary donations,” Amy said. “and just to have all the love flow towards Nora.”
