Powell cross country excels at Sheridan invitational

Powell cross country participated in the Michelle Ludwig Invitational in Sheridan on Friday, competing against Tongue River, Sheridan, Douglas, Worland, Natrona County and Big Horn. The Panthers dominated in every event, placing first in girls’ varsity and boys’ varsity and junior varsity.

Kabrie Cannon won the girls’ varsity race with a time of 21:12.09. Two other Panthers — Meaghan McKeen (fourth) and Gabby Thomas (sixth) — finished in the top 10.

With an average time of 23:26.67, Powell cruised to a victory in the girls’ race.

“I was very happy with how all of the girls ran in Sheridan,” PHS head coach Ashley Hildebrand said. “The course had some rolling hills, but many of our girls were able to post personal bests on the season, and they won the team title.”

Five Panthers finished in the top 10 of the varsity boys’ division, with Daniel Merritt recording a time of 17:38.46 to take third overall.

Joey Hernandez also finished in the top five with a time of 18:14.80. Chance Franks, Lane Franks and Riley Schiller finished seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively.

On the junior varsity squad, senior Isaac Summers logged his best time of the season, 19:35.09, for a first-place finish, helping the JV claim first place in that competition.

With two meets on the slate this week (the Rocky Mountain Invitational in Lovell on Monday and the Worland Invitational on Thursday), Hildebrand is excited to see how her teams perform after a strong weekend.

“Overall, I am really impressed with how our team is coming along at this point in the season,” Hildebrand said. “Both courses are fast and will hopefully yield some good times to our runners.”
