Police again using beards to raise funds

The Powell Police Department is again participating in the annual Donate to Insulate fundraiser to support Special Olympics Wyoming and the Wyoming Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Powell officers will join other law enforcement agencies across the state in support of Special Olympics Wyoming. The organization provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with an intellectual disability — giving them opportunities “to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship. More than 2,400 athletes compete across Wyoming, including over 60 athletes in Park County.

The Powell Police Department has a strict facial hair policy forbidding beards, but the policy is waived in January and February to support Special Olympics Wyoming. To participate, officers must each make and raise donations. Each dollar donated is a “vote” for the best beard in the department.

“The Donate to Insulate fundraiser will help our officers stay warm when they go Freezin’ for a Reason during the annual Jackalope Jump fundraiser for Special Olympics that will be held in March,” added Officer Matt Koritnik.

Donations can be made at give.sowy.org/teams/16360-powell-pd or by stopping by the department at 250 N. Clark St. Call 307-754-2212 for more information.

Across the state, law enforcement agencies had raised nearly $2,000 of their $8,000 fundraising goal as of Monday. The seven participating Powell police officers have raised $605 of their $5,000 goal.
