Pokes rally, but fall short

After losing quarterback Sean Chambers to an injury on their opening drive, the University of Wyoming Cowboys showed heart in Saturday’s season opener. The Pokes fought back from a 28-6 deficit late in the third quarter and forced overtime against the University of Nevada before falling 37-34.

UW trailed just 7-6 shortly before halftime, but Nevada scored on three straight possessions to take their largest lead. However, the Pokes took charge from there and fought back to tie the game 28-28. Nevada retook the lead at 31-28 with 3:26 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Cowboys drove 74 yards and true freshman place-kicker John Hoyland booted a 42-yard field goal with 23 seconds remaining in regulation. That tied the game at 31-31 and forced overtime.

In the first overtime, Wyoming could not convert a first down and Hoyland kicked a 38-yard field goal, his fourth of the game, to give Wyoming its first lead, 34-31. But Nevada quarterback Carson Strong found wide receiver Romeo Doubs on a 9-yard touchdown pass to win the game, 37-34.

“Our guys believed,” said Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl. “They didn’t panic. They played with poise, and the momentum started to swing our way. ... There are a lot of good things, but there are things we have to work on.”

The Cowboys will next host the Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors at 7:45 p.m. Friday at War Memorial Stadium.
