Pioneers to host state tournament

Following a successful weekend at the district tournament in Cody, the Powell Pioneers A team will look to build on that success when it hosts the state tournament, starting Saturday.

The Pioneers earned the No. 1 seed from the West region by winning the district tourney. In the first round at state, the Powell team will face Cheyenne, the No. 4 seed from the East region. The teams did not play against each other in the regular season.

First pitch is slated for 8 p.m. Saturday at Ed Lynn Memorial Field.

After that, Powell will face either Riverton or Douglas, depending on the first round’s results. The Pioneers are 4-3 against district foe Riverton, with the most recent win coming on Saturday. They also defeated Douglas in a non-league game in mid-June.

Winners of five of their last six games, the Pioneers are heading into their final weekend of baseball on a hot streak.

“I think we’re ready to go,” head coach Joe Cates said of his squad. “I think they know they can handle anything that’s thrown at them.”

Other teams competing in the tournament include Cody, Torrington, Casper and Green River.

The double-elimination tournament is set to run through Wednesday.
