It was two duals up and none down for the Powell Panther wrestlers on Tuesday night in Laurel, Montana.
Coach Nate Urbach’s crew defeated Huntley Project in the evening’s opening round, 44-30, then manhandled host Laurel by a score of 48-21.
Cody, the fourth team in the event, also wrestled Huntley Project and Laurel.
Against the Locomotives of Laurel, Powell got pins from Michael Maddox (132 pounds), Riley Bennett (145), Seth Horton (152), Bo Dearcorn (170) and Carson Olsen (205).
Decisions Powell’s way went to Colt Nicholson (106), Logan Werner (113) and Emma Karhu (120).
The win went in the books, however, Urbach said the Panthers “gave up too many pins” to the Locomotives, who scored points by fall three times.
There were other matches, the coach said, that might have gone better. Still, all and all it was a somewhat surprising score over what everyone knows to be a good Laurel team.
“Logan Werner really wrestled well against a tough kid,” winning 9-3, he said, “and Emma [Karhu] wrestled well, too.”
Karhu looked for all the world to have Locomotive Johnathan Kerr crisply stuck, however neither of two officials on the mat had eyes-on the Locomotive 120-pounder’s shoulders. Karhu dominated throughout and won an 8-0 decision to go with a 6-2 decision over Huntley Project and was unbeaten on the trip.
“Seth [Horton] had a tough kid, but he stayed steady,” Urbach said. Horton outlasted Tyler Emineth and earned the pin in 4:36.
Notching points by fall for Powell were Nicholson, Corey Linebaugh, Bennett and Dearcorn to go with a major decision victory by Horton. Karhu won by decision while Maddox and Trevor Feller received forfeits.
Next up for the Panthers, now 9-0 in duals, is a trip to Missoula this Friday and Saturday to compete in an exclusive, by-invitation-only, 32-team meet.
“It’s the toughest” of the year, said Urbach. There will be teams from Idaho, Montana, Washington, Oregon and Wyoming.
