In what could serve as a preview for the 3A North Conference meet next month, the Panther swim team pulled away with 487 points to win the Worland Invitational on Saturday.

With all seven teams in attendance from the north conference along with Rawlins, Powell used its depth to finish 113 points ahead of second place Cody. The meet was scored to 16 places.

“This meet was a nice dry run for conference in four weeks,” coach Bob Smartt said. “The meet was scored to 16 places, which plays to our team depth. The conference meet will only score to 12 places.”

Gabby Paterson led the way for Powell, being the sole two event winner on the day, winning the 200 free (2:10.34) and the 100 free (59.94).

Kik Hayano won the 100 fly (1:06.51) and Grace Sapp won the 100 back (1:04.10).

“We swam a lineup that was very close to optimal,” Smartt said. “We were missing Emma Mitchell due to Lovell homecoming. She will make our relays stronger at conference.”

Powell will make a short trip this week during homecoming, heading to Cody on Thursday to take part in a 5 p.m. meet.

The Panthers will then head to Douglas on Saturday for the Douglas Invitational starting at 10 a.m.
