One final opportunity for swimmers to advance to the 3A State Swim and Dive meet next weekend in Laramie came on Thursday at the Terry Bartlett Last Chance meet in Cody.

Ten swimmers made their way to Cody, with four athletes trying to earn their first qualifying marks of the year.

Personal bests were posted by Emma Sapp in the 200 IM (2:54.49) and the 500 free (6:37.34), but she fell just seconds short of reaching the qualifying standard in the 500 free.

Additional best marks were achieved by Charlee Brence in the 50 free (28.67) and 100 free (1:02.99) while Leah Sockey finished with her best times in the 100 free (1:37.54) and 100 back (1:46.11).

Croix Tryon earned a second qualifying mark for state in the 200 IM (2:36.7).

Grace Sapp finished with a top time in the 100 back (1:02.66), moving her to second all-time on the Powell Wall of Fame. That time is one second behind Amanda Tracy who holds the record with a time of 1:01.61

STATE MEET

Powell now heads to its final meet of the season, making the long trip to Laramie to take part in the 3A State Swim and Dive meet on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.

“With 18 state qualifiers we are pleased to be the largest squad at 3A state — that was one of our team goals and our final goal is to make the podium at state,” coach Bob Smartt said.

Powell will look to repeat its performance from the past two years and end up on the podium for the third year in a row.

The Panthers head into the meet as the third favorite for the state title, behind defending state co-champions Green River and Lander.

Another wrinkle in the equation this year will be Evanston, who dropped down from 4A to 3A without any teams moving up — putting more potential swimmers in finals to take away from the Panthers’ point-scoring depth at state.

At the state meet, senior Kami Jensen will be competing to defend her state title in diving — which she won on the final dive last year.

The Panthers final weekend will see strong times and top competitors, as Powell eyes another podium finish.

HIGH-TECH SWIMSUITS

This season the Panthers were hoping to employ TritonWear swimsuits into the program in order to track extensive data to determine how to improve times.

Unfortunately only three suits were delivered and the rest were delayed until next year which Smartt hopes the suits will help Powell in the future as the first team in Wyoming to employ the new technology that is being used at the Olympics and World Championships.
