PHS swim dominates Cody dual

Additional diver qualifies

Posted

Early action at the Powell Aquatic Center had Powell locked in a dual against rival Cody, with the Panthers winning nine of 12 events — resulting in a 185-121 victory for the hosts.

One new qualifier was added to the state team when freshman Tori Black shot past the qualifying mark in diving, finishing in second place with a 161.35.

“Getting Tori qualified was a big deal,” coach Bob Smartt said.

Black is now the third qualified diver for the Panthers, and is the 15th qualifier overall for the state meet in just a month and a half.

Individual event winners for the Panthers included Emma Mitchell in the 200 IM (2:25.98) and the 100 free (57.87); Gabby Paterson in the 50 free (27.53) and the 100 breast (1:16.62); Kami Jensen in diving (187.25); Kik Hayano in the 500 free (6:08.66) and Addy Powell in the 100 back (1:09.48).

“There were not a lot of heats and we were asking a lot of kids to swim some races back to back,” Smartt said.

The 200 medley composed of Grace Sapp, Mitchell, Paige Thomas and Powell won in a time of 2:01.40.

The 200 free relay team of Sapp, Paterson, Mitchell and Hayano won in a time of 1:48.03 — defeating Cody’s relay by .05 seconds.

Overall, 15 Panthers hit qualifying standards over the 12 events on the day.

Cody’s Tara Joyce broke the state record in the 50 free as the leadoff leg for the 200 free relay, finishing in a time of 23.98.

The Panthers now head back on the road this weekend, making the trip Saturday to Worland for an invitational meet, starting at 10 a.m.
