PHS girls track succeeds against tough competition

L.A. Kohnke invite this Saturday

Tough competition early in the season helps teams understand where they are, and the Powell High School girls’ track team ran into tough opponents in Buffalo at the Jerry Campbell Invite on Saturday. The Panthers placed fourth with 80.90 points, only trailing 4A teams Sheridan, Thunder Basin and Campbell County.

The lone victor on the day for the Panthers was sophomore Waycee Harvey, who won the long jump with a state qualifying mark of 16 feet, 4 3/4 inches.

Second place finishers for the Panthers were senior Jenna Hillman in the 100 meter dash, with a time of 13.10, and junior Sydney Spomer in the triple jump, with a leap of 31 feet, 10 1/4 inches.

Third place finishers for the Panthers were Harvey in the 100 with a time of 13.31, Jenna Hillman in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.32, junior Anna Bartholomew in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:31.14, sophomore Brynn Hillman in the 3200 meter run with a time of 13:03.24 and sophomore Kenzie Ratcliff, who tied for third in the high jump at 4 feet, 9 inches.

“It is good any time to compete against top level competition,” Panther track coach Scott Smith said. “It was probably better for our newcomers to see what is out there to motivate them to raise their goals for themselves.”

In addition to competing against top 4A teams, the Panthers matched up against two 3A East teams in Buffalo and Douglas, who are expected to compete for the state title at the end of the season.

The Panthers walked away with a nearly 16-point advantage over Buffalo, and a more than 50-point advantage over Douglas.

Smith said it was fun for the kids to compete against the eastern teams, and now that the fear of the unknown has been overcome, it should make the team better against those competitors in the future.

The Panthers will play host to a track meet of their own on Saturday starting at 9 a.m. Burlington, Cody, Lovell, Meeteetse, Rocky Mountain, Ten Sleep and Worland are all expected to be in attendance.

Weather for Saturday is forecasted to be warm in the upper 60s, something Smith hopes will help lead his team to new personal records.

“Weather was great in Buffalo but loading a bus at 5:30 [a.m.] and finishing the meet at 7 p.m. isn’t as ‘user friendly’ as sleeping in your own bed,” Smith said. “We had a large supporting crowd in Buffalo along with some former Panthers that came to visit from nearby colleges, but the chance to have more family and friends to come watch is always a big boost.”
