Take twelve first place finishes

The Panther girls’ track team turned in a dominant performance on Saturday in Cowley, as it ran away from the competition — scoring 261.5 points, more than double second place Lovell with 118.5.

Overall at the Rocky Mountain Invitational, the Panthers had nine individual first place finishes and three relay race victories.

Sophomore Lauryn Bennett won the pole vault with a qualifying mark of 9 feet, 1 inch, earning her spot at the state meet later this month.

Junior Anna Bartholomew won the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.84; junior Megan Jacobsen won the 800 meters with a 2:31.78; and senior Abigail Urbach won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.31.

Sophomore Addy Thorington tied for first place in the high jump clearing 4 feet, 10 inches; sophomore Waycee Harvey won the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 1 1/2 inches; and junior Sydney Spomer won the triple jump with a leap of 33 feet, 11 1/4 inches.

Senior Reagan Thompson won the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 2 inches; and junior Grace Coombs won the discus with a throw of 100 feet.

The relay team of Urbach, senior Kylie Kahl, freshman Catelynn Floy and sophomore Kenzie Ratcliff won the 4x100 with a time of 53.80. In the 4x800 meter relay, the team of Megan Jacobsen, Bartholomew, freshman Kinley Cooley and sophomore Brynn Hillman won, improving a previous state qualifying time by 16 seconds to 10:23.59.

The 1600 sprint medley team of Kahl, senior Jenna Hillman, Bartholomew and freshman Kenna Jacobsen won with a state qualifying time of 4:35.18.

“All those automatic qualifiers were indicators of the overall team performance,” Panther track coach Scott Smith said. “The full week of practice and the beautiful weather brought out a ton of great performances.”

The Panthers picked up a large amount of points through their top performances in both hurdle races, as they placed in five out of the top eight in both races.

Depth also helped the Panthers to pick up half of the top eight in the 800, 1600 and the discus as they continued their strong season.

Regionals are fast approaching for the Panthers; they have two meets this week to close out the regular season.

Powell makes two short trips this week, as they head to Cody on Thursday to take part in the Trackstravaganza starting at noon. A short turnaround will have the Panthers heading south on Friday to Thermopolis to take part in its invitational starting at 1 p.m.

Smith said they are hoping to shore up the team heading to regionals next week, which starts on Friday, May 13, in Kemmerer.

The team is transitioning into focusing on specifics in training as the season quickly winds to an end with the state meet under three weeks away.
