Two school records fall

Powell High School’s swim and dive began the postseason on a high note on Saturday, breaking a couple of school records, taking a pair of individual titles and second overall at the 3A West Conference Meet in Lander.

The Panther girls finished as runners up as a team at the event, nine points behind Green River. Other schools at the meet were Lander, Sublette County, Lyman, Kemmerer and Riverton.

PHS notched two conference-championship performances. Elizabeth Liggett’s time of 2:02.65 was good for first place in the 200 free. And Emma Karhu won the conference championship in the 1-meter 11 dives, scoring 402.10 points for a new school record.

While those were Powell’s only event wins, the Panthers had several other impressive swims. The 200 medley relay team of Grace Sapp, Emma Mitchell, Lucia Harder and Madison Lowery broke the school record with a time of 1:55.85. Lucia Harder took second place at conference in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:04.37.

PHS also set 23 personal records. Sapp set a triple personal record, with improved times in the medley relay, 50 free and 100 backstroke, while Grace Harder, Paige Thomas and Colette Sanders each had double personal bests.

Per head coach Bob Smartt, the team’s performance may have been aided by tech knee suits. Competitors Green River and Lander didn’t wear tech suits at conference but will at the Nov. 5-7 state meet, which Smartt expects to have a positive impact on their times.

Before the Class 3A State Meet in Laramie, swimmers will participate in the Last Chance Meet in Lander this weekend, where athletes have one final chance to try to qualify for state.
