PHS boys tennis squad sweeps Natrona County over the weekend

Teams drop matches against Kelly Walsh, Cody

In their final tuneups before the start of the postseason, the Powell High School tennis teams faced some real tests.

The Panther boys and girls squared off with Cody and the two Casper schools, with boys going 1-2 — including a dominating sweep of Natrona County High School — and the girls going 0-3.

Although the final scores didn’t go Powell’s way, head coach Joe Asay was pleased with the way his squads played over the weekend and is looking forward to this week’s regional tournament.

“The kids have always competed and played really well in all their matches, even those losses, so I’m excited to see this next step [and] head onto the court to compete for regionals,” Asay said.

It was a strong weekend for Powell’s No. 2 doubles teams, who each won two of their three matches.

Panthers Alli Harp and Alexis Terry bested Noelle Graham and Liliana Fink of Cody, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 on Thursday — avenging a three-set loss to the Fillies late last month. Then on Saturday, Terry and Harp picked up a 6-4, 7-6 win over Asia Limmer and Iliana Tavlealea of Natrona County High School.

On the boys’ side, Cade Queen and Ryan Cordes again beat William Law and Micah Idema of Cody (7-6 (8-6), 6-4) before defeating Jerome Neumiller and Carlos Soto Franco of Natrona County 6-1, 6-1 on Saturday.

“Those two teams are coming together really well,” Asay said of his No. 2 doubles players, “so it’s kind of fun to see that.”

Cody

Despite falling to their cross-county rivals 4-1, the Panther boys and girls gave the Broncs and Fillies a fight and won twice as many sets as they had the prior week.

“In each of those matches, everybody competed real well,” said Asay. For instance, although Cody prevailed, all four of Powell’s singles players — Ethan Bartholomew, Chase Anderson, Aiden Chandler and Kaili Wisniewski — pushed their matches to three sets.

The Panthers battled so hard that several players ran out of daylight Thursday evening, forcing the matches to be continued Friday afternoon.

“To me it just kind of says … there’s potential there that if things [are] clicking for them, they could find themselves with the wins” against Cody in the future, Asay said.

Kelly Walsh and Natrona County

The Panthers played well against Kelly Walsh on Saturday morning, but the boys and girls were swept 5-0 by what Asay described as a couple of the strongest teams in the state. He said Kelly Walsh has “just a lot of depth.”

“My doubles boys once again all battled well and got games, but just not enough to win the matches there,” Asay said. The Powell girls’ doubles players also took some games from the Trojans, with No. 3 doubles players Lachelle Lee and Tyler Sessions winning seven games in a 6-3, 6-4 loss.

It was a different story against Natrona County, however.

All five Powell boys players and doubles teams won in straight sets. Asay says he hopes the squad picked up some confidence in the victories.

Meanwhile, the Panther girls fell 3-2.

Beyond Terry and Harp’s win at No. 2 doubles, PHS girls No. 2 singles player Kaili Wisniewski delivered a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win over her opponent.

“It was just fun to see Kaili [Wisniewski] get out, just play a real solid game and take that one,” Asay said.

With the regular season now in the books, the Powell tennis teams next head to the North Regional Tournament, which will be held on Friday and Saturday in Sheridan.

“I think it’ll be a good trip this weekend,” the coach said.
