PHS boys bounce back against Cody

After suffering their first loss of the season on Saturday, the Panther boys’ soccer team had little time to relax as they took on the rival Cody Broncs on Tuesday night. The Powell High School boys walked away with a hard fought 3-0 victory.

The Panthers (4-1 overall, 2-0 3A West) knew they were going to have a tough matchup in the midfield against Cody (1-2 overall, 1-1 3A West); PHS was without senior All-State midfielder Garrett Morris who was out with an injured foot.

The weather played a factor early on, as the Broncs took advantage of the wind at their backs and held possession in the attacking half of the field.

The Panthers settled in and created attacks of their own, but neither team challenged the opposing goalkeeper over the first 18 minutes.

“You never want to underestimate your opponent, and Cody has a history of outworking us,” PHS head coach David Gilliatt said. “We did not want to get outworked, and there were some times where we did get outworked.”

The Panthers found the back of the net when a shot from senior Hawkin Sweeney was saved by the Bronc goalkeeper, then tapped in by fellow senior Keaton Rowton on the deflection. It was Rowton’s fifth goal of the season.

Cody nearly responded six minutes later, as a shot across goal skipped just past the post. However, Powell held off the Cody attack and hung on to the 1-0 lead at halftime.

After getting the wind at their backs in the second half, the Panthers’ next scoring opportunity came in the 58th minute, as a free kick from sophomore Chance Franks curled around the wall and hit the post. That shot bounced out, but Powell got their second goal in the 63rd minute. A cross in a short corner got cleared out only to the 18-yard box and Sweeney rifled it past the keeper for his 10th goal of the season.

Things started to get chippy between the two teams over the final 15 minutes, as both teams tried to find one final goal.

Franks pushed the ball up the right wing and got it past the Bronc defender before being tripped in the box, earning a penalty for Powell with six minutes left. Franks then stepped up to the spot and slotted it past the keeper to make the final score 3-0.

“I have mixed feelings; I think we should have played better,” Gilliatt said. “I am proud that we came away with the win, but I would like to do so executing our game plan more so than we did.”

ROAD TRIP

With the win over Cody, the Panthers moved to 2-0 in conference play. They’ll look to double their wins this weekend as they head to Lyman and Mountain View.

The first game will be at 5 p.m. Friday against Mountain View (0-2 overall, 0-2 3A West). The Panthers will then have a quick turnaround, taking on Lyman (1-4 overall, 0-1 3A West) on Saturday at noon.

“We need to execute our game plan, play the way we play, don’t play the way our opponent plays and outwork our opponents,” Gilliatt said.
