Park County youths compete at state high school rodeo finals

Four youths from Park County recently competed at the Wyoming High School Rodeo Finals.

The event, held June 10-12 in Douglas, featured roughly 160 high school rodeo competitors from around the state. The rodeo capped the state's season, which began back in August.

Audrey Kremer of Powell competed in breakaway roping, barrel racing and team roping.

In breakaway, Kremer posted a first go around time of 7.69 seconds, before posting no score in the second go. She posted times of 18.82 and 24.24 seconds in barrel racing to make the short go.

In team roping, the heeler posted a time of 19.9 seconds in the first go, with no score in the second go.

Kremer finished the season 10th in barrel racing, 35th in breakaway roping, and 37th in team roping.

Caytlen Vineyard, also of Powell, competed in Douglas in barrel racing (with times of 18.4 and 18.21 seconds) and pole bending.

After having no score in the first day of the pole bending competition, Vineyard posted a time of 21.13 seconds in the second go — good for sixth place on the day. She made the short go in the event.

Vineyard finished the season 14th in pole bending and 22nd in the barrels.

Other Park County participants included bullriders Kyle Cheney of Powell and Daniel Rasmussen of Cody, who did not post scores. Cheney finished the year in ninth place and Rasmussen in 17th; Caden Gines of Powell finished in 16th place.

Meanwhile, at last month’s junior high rodeo finals in Gillette, Cathryn Vineyard of Powell competed in barrel racing, breakaway roping and team roping.

She finished the season in seventh place in barrel racing (posting times of 15.44 and 14.62 seconds at state), 16th in breakaway roping (with a second go of 4.87 seconds) and 15th in team roping. Cason Gines and Kanton Apanashk of Powell also competed in team roping during the 2020-21 junior high season.

Leaders of American Legion Hughes-Pittinger Post 26 congratulated all of the competitors from the Powell area.

“Thanks to all of these young cowpokes,” the post said.

In Wyoming, rodeo is not a school-sanctioned sport, so the rodeo finals are organized by the Wyoming High School Rodeo Association — a nonprofit backed by the Legion. The organization’s mission is to encourage sportsmanship, character, citizenship and a spirit of competition among high school rodeo participants, while “maintaining standards in education, creating opportunities for family bonding, exposing the public to a positive image of rodeo and preserving and promoting Western heritage.”
