Panthers win Tuesday swim meet

Matched up against Worland and Cody at home on Tuesday, the Powell High School swimming team topped the field.

“Overall we had another good meet,” said coach Stephanie Warren.

Despite missing a couple swimmers, PHS piled up 405 points, followed by 319 points for Worland and 215 for Cody.

“Jay Cox was at all-state band and Hunter Davis was sick, but the rest did really well again,” Warren said. “Many of them are continuing to take time off and improve as we are getting ready for some of the hardest weeks of training coming up. A couple added more qualifying events to their list of qualifying times.”

Event winners included Bryce Hogen (diving), Nate Johnston (200 free and 100 fly), Ru Parker (100 back), Richard Spann (100 breast) Kyler Warren (500 free). The PHS 200 free relay team — made up of Tarren Blackmore, Ben Cannizzaro, Hogen and Spann — also emerged from the pool as victors.

Blackmore swam the 200 individual medley for the first time in a couple years and knocked 24.90 seconds off his previous best, for a time of 2:26.27. He also took 2.24 seconds off his 100 free (54.40) for another personal record.

Johnston took time off in his 200 free (1:59.54) and 100 fly (1:01.08 — taking off 2.05 seconds).

Kyler Warren, meanwhile, “had a great meet, he swam distance events and did a great job,” the coach said. He took off nearly a second in the 200 free, “but his 500 free was by far his best race,” coach Warren said. “Swimming it for the first time ever he swam a 6:21.07 and was within three seconds of qualifying.”

Josh Wright shaved off a little time also in the 200 IM (0.55 seconds) and swam a 2:43.80. Wright also was very close to qualifying in the 500, missing by just four seconds.

In the 50 free, nearly all of Powell’s swimmers shaved a little time and had PRs.

Diver Bryce Hogen had a PR with a score of 195.7 and also posted a season-best 1:00.72 in the 100 free.

Kobus Diver, coach Warren said, “had an amazing 100 free swim and took 6.30 seconds off of his fastest time.”

Francis Rogers made time go backward in the 100 backstroke, where he topped his previous best effort by 1.06 seconds and clocked in at 1:10.69.

Ben Cannizzaro took 2.58 seconds off of his time and swam a 1:13.50 in the backstroke.

Aidan Cannizzaro, meanwhile, had a PR in the breaststroke at 1:28.82 — a 5.50 second improvement.

On Saturday, the Panthers will travel to compete in the Lander Valley Invitational.
