Team places fourth at Cody trackstravaganza

Two meets in two days led to mixed results for the Panther boys’ track team, as they placed fourth in Cody on Thursday, but followed that up with a dominating team win in Thermopolis on Friday.

Bright skies with little wind helped the Panthers achieve some strong performances in Cody on Thursday, but the team fell short of a title as they finished 1 1/2 points behind 3A foe Worland and 66 behind 4A victors Sheridan.

The top performance of the day came from sophomore Isaiah Woyak, who finished top in the high jump setting a personal best height of 6 feet, 6 inches.

“It is always great to see personal records (PR), but Isaiah’s 6 inch PR in the high jump is very rare,” Panther Track Coach Scott Smith said.

That mark currently is the best in 3A heading into regional competition.

Senior Zach Ratcliff won the long jump, as he just broke 20 feet finishing with a jump of 20 feet, 1 1/2 inches.

Fellow senior Toran Graham got back on track, as he won the shot put with a throw of 53 feet, 9 1/2 inches.

In addition to Graham winning, senior Lane Shramek reached automatic state qualification by half an inch in the shot put with his fourth place throw of 47 feet, 4 1/2 inches.

BOBCAT INVITATIONAL

After a rarified Thursday meet, the team made a slightly longer trip to Thermopolis on Friday to take part in the Bobcat Invitational.

In the Bobcat Invitational, the Panthers took advantage of five individual first place finishes to win the team competition by 43 points over second place Big Piney.

Junior Daniel Merritt was the first victor, as he went into his first open 400 race of the season and walked away with first place in a time of 52.67.

Following Woyak’s performance on Thursday, senior teammate Eli Weimer got back on track. He won the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 4 inches, and tied for the second best mark in 3A this season.

“It was nice to see Eli [Weimer] get back on track as he had been struggling a bit,” Smith said. “Coach [Ashley] Hildebrand had been working on their approaches and it really paid off this weekend.”

Sophomore Jeremy Harms walked away with the pole vault title as he cleared 11 feet, 6 inches, winning on less missed attempts over Jack Godfredson from Burlington.

Graham won the shot put for the second day in a row, throwing almost identical to Thursday as he won with a throw of 53 feet, 9 inches.

Fellow senior Sheldon Shoopman won the discus with a throw of 147 feet, 2 1/2 inches.

REGIONALS

The regular season has quickly come to an end, as the Panthers now head on two long road trips to end the 2022 campaign.

That road trip starts with regionals, as they make the long trip to Kemmerer to take part in the 3A West Regional meet on Friday and Saturday.

“We will be fine tuning our technique and getting a little conditioning early this week,” Smith said. “We will just be looking to keep the improvements moving forward.”

The meet kicks off on Friday at noon, and continues on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
