Panthers sixth in season-opening tourney

Powell High School’s golf team kicked off the 2021-22 athletic calendar last week, competing in the Park County Shootout. The first day of the tournament was played at Cody’s Olive Glenn Golf Club on Thursday, while Powell Golf Club hosted day two.

The Panthers finished sixth as a team, posting a two-day team score of 803. Worland won the event with a score of 659.

Overall, PHS head coach Troy Hildebrand hoped his team would perform slightly better at its first tourney of the year, but he still thought it was a successful first weekend.

“While I thought we might play a little better than we did this week I wasn’t really surprised with our results,” the coach said. “We are a very young team in terms of tournament experience and each week we are going to grow and find areas to help us lower our individual and team scores.”

Sophomore Gunnar Erickson was Powell’s top individual finisher, placing 23rd with a 102-95. Erickson, who competed at state last year, “bounced back from a tough first day in Cody with a much better round in Powell,” per Hildebrand.

Andrew Jones had the best single-day score for the Panthers, shooting a 92 in Cody before posting a 106 at Powell. He shot a 42 on the front nine on Thursday, which Hildebrand said “is the type of golf that I know he is capable of and that is what he will be working to capture each week for us.”

In his first high school tourney, freshman Trey Scott shot 96-103. Despite a tough stretch Friday, Scott showed promise and “has a very bright future for us and I am pleased with his starting point,” according to Hildebrand.

Will Jackson was Powell’s fourth-place finisher at 104-108. Jackson played consistently, and it was “nice to see it pay off for him,” Hildebrand said.

Parker Williams shaved seven strokes off his Thursday score, shooting a 108 Friday after a 115 to start the tournament. Hildebrand expects his development to continue steadily, saying Williams “is a very smart player and a hard worker.”

And junior Seth Siebert “kept a positive attitude” despite a tough first six holes in Cody. He shot a 119-109 but should enter the next tournament “with more confidence in his game,” his coach said.

Two golfers — Isaiah Woyak and Sam Johnston — only played on Thursday. Woyak shot 100, while Johnston posted a 135.

Worland’s Karsten Simmons won the event with scores of 70-68, besting Hardy Johnson of Thermopolis (67-75). Erika Cook of Lovell High School fired rounds of 75 and 73, finishing a whopping 57 strokes ahead of the field.

The Panthers will look to build on this season-opening event this week, playing a two-day tournament at Worland’s Green Hills Golf Course on Thursday and Friday.

“This first tournament gives us a starting point for the fall and some areas to improve,” Hildebrand said.
