Panthers see mixed results in first meet

Posted

After an unexpected extra week of preseason the Powell High School indoor track team began its inaugural season in Gillette last Saturday — where mixed results met the Panthers in their first ever indoor meet.

Leading the way for the meet individually was Isaiah Woyak, who was the only Panther to reach a state qualifying standard after clearing 6 feet, 4 inches during the high jump to place second in the competition.

“It was nice to see him healthy again,” coach Scott Smith said. “We really haven’t been able to work much with high jump and both he and Hali Hancock jumped very well. They both have room for improvement, which is very exciting.”

Smith said the athletes learned a lot from the first meet, including races being harder to pass in, tight corners being more difficult to run and finding a spot to warm up being difficult due to the condensed area and 19 teams in attendance with hundreds of athletes competing.

On the girls side, the 1600 sprint medley relay team of Sydney Spomer, Anna Bartholomew, Audrey Johnson and Kenna Jacobsen led the way — claiming victory with a time of 4:42.85.

The 4x800 relay team of Brynn Hillman, Melissa Merrit, Johnson and Jacobsen placed fifth (11:09.87) as the other relay team claiming points.

Individually, Bartholomew, Spomer and Hillman were the top placers for the Panthers — with Bartholomew placing fifth in the 400 (1:04.99), Spomer placing sixth in the triple jump (31-11) and Hillman placing sixth in the 800 (2:45.65) and seventh in the 1600 (5:57.89).

“We were really happy with how the kids came out and competed,” Smith said. “Many teams already had a meet under their belts and our kids did a great job of competing hard.”

Overall the Panther girls placed 11th as a team and fourth among teams competing in 3A this season. The boys placed in a tie for 13th as a team and tied for sixth among teams competing in 3A.

NEXT MEET

Powell now has a chance to reflect on its first meet, taking this weekend off before returning to Gillette next Friday.

“We will be moving kids around into different events and relays to get a better idea of where our strengths are,” Smith said. “Workouts will be designed for conditioning improvement for the next couple of weeks.”
