The Powell High School boys’ and girls’ tennis dropped non-conference matches against Cody on Tuesday. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams are now 2-3 on the young season.
The boys’ team lost 5-0 at PHS, not winning a set.
In No. 2 doubles, Ryan Cordes and CJ Barrus came the closest to a win, falling 6-7 in one of the sets. Aiden Chandler also almost won a set in No. 2 singles, falling 5-7 in the second set against CJ Dominick.
On the girls’ side, the Panthers fell 4-1, while taking three of the matches to three sets. Powell’s lone match win came in No. 2 doubles, with Whitney Hull/Chase Anderson defeating Hudson Selk/Sage Crofts in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 12-10).
Two other matches — Sami Cole vs. Anna Brenner (No. 2 singles) and Sophe Morrow/Sydnee Thompson vs. Soffy Anderson/Ash Staggs — were decided in third-set tiebreakers.
Even though the results didn’t go in the Panthers’ favor, head coach Joe Asay said he’s proud of the way his athletes competed.
“Each of the kids competed well, fought well, but there is always room for improvement,” Asay said.
Next up is a home meeting against Sheridan and Jackson, where the Panthers will look to get back to .500.
“Our season has just begun and these kids are smart,” Asay said. “They’ll make the adjustments.”
