Wrestler’s Christmas is an opportunity to give back to the community for those in need, and the Panther wrestling team continued that tradition Monday before heading off for winter break.
The athletes head out into the community and are given a short time to shop for gifts provided from schools in the area that believe families need help around the holidays. They then head back and spend time together wrapping gifts and then head to each family as a team to give them the presents.
“This has been a tradition since before I even got here,” Panther head coach Nick Fulton said to his athletes on Monday, “and as long as I am here it will continue on.”
The long-standing tradition started before Fulton came to the program with former coach Nate Urbach, and he hopes the break from practice helps his team realize the importance of the program in the community.
“It is giving back to the community; they have helped us with wrestling and it is always fun to do,” Panther senior Brent Childers said.
Childers said it’s important that he and the upperclassmen help pass the tradition down to the underclassmen, as they hope to continue the tradition for years to come to help those out in the community.
His favorite part about the experience?
“When we give them the presents, we yell merry Christmas and then run back to the car,” Childers said.
