Panther swimming remains unbeaten after Cody meet

Two more opportunities for the Powell High School girls’ swimming team to improve came this past week, with the Panthers winning a close dual against Cody on Thursday before winning the Douglas Invitational on Saturday to remain undefeated on the season.

The week began on Thursday with a dual in Cody, where the Panthers pulled away in a tight contest to win by 13 points.

That victory came via six individual race wins from three athletes, alongside one relay win.

Emma Mitchell was a two-event winner, winning the 50 free (25.83) and the 100 free (58.11). Gabby Paterson was the other two-event winner, claiming victory in the 200 free (2:11.46) and the 100 breast (1:18.33).

The final Panther to win two events was Kik Hayano, who won the 200 IM (2:31.60) and the 500 free (6:03.72).

“The two best events for us were the 200 IM where we went 1-2-3-4, and the 100 breaststroke where we finished 1-2-3,” coach Bob Smartt said.

The sole relay win on the day came from the 200 free relay where the team of Grace Sapp, Paterson, Mitchell and Hayano won with a 1:49.46.

Tara Joyce of Cody put on her speed suit for the meet, breaking the 3A state record in both the 100 fly and back. She now holds seven of the eight individual 3A state records.

After pulling out a victory on Thursday night, the Panthers took to the road Saturday to take part in the Douglas Invitational.

Douglas presented a unique opportunity to Powell, as the Bearcat swimming pool is 25 meters as opposed to 25 yards, which is what the Panthers swim in a majority of the year.

“This was our first meet of the year in a 25-meter pool,” Smartt said. “The conversion times from 25 meters to 25 yards is problematic as meter pools are 11% longer.”

Longer races meant slower times, but that did not stop the Panthers from winning the meet by 56 points. The meet scored only seven places as opposed to a typical 12 or 16 places.

Mitchell was the only two-event winner on the day, winning the 50 free (29.40) and the 100 breast (1:21.27).

Sapp was the other race winner, coming in first in the 100 back (1:13.79). Kami Jensen made a return to the diving board after not competing on Thursday, winning with a total of 191.65.

The sole relay win on the day went to the 400 free relay composed of Kaitlin Diver, Hayano, Paterson and Sapp (4:33.18).

Powell heads back out on the road this weekend, taking part in two separate meets.

The weekend starts in Sheridan on Friday, where the Panthers take on 4A Sheridan in a dual at 4 p.m.

A short trip south will follow, sending Powell to Buffalo on Saturday to take part in an invitational. No start time has been announced for the Buffalo meet.
