Final diver qualifies

Heading out on the road and competing against 4A competition did not slow down the Powell High School girls’ swimming team, which defeated Sheridan in a dual on Friday and won the Buffalo Invitational on Saturday.

Headlining the day on Friday was diver Emma Brence, who shot past the qualifying standard of 250 during the 11 dive competition to finish with 256.95 points in fifth place.

“It is slightly easier for a consistent diver to qualify for state in the 11 dive competition versus the six dive competition,” coach Bob Smartt said. “Our conference and state meets will feature 11 dive competitions.”

Brence was the fourth and final diver to qualify for the state meet in just under a month’s time.

Fellow diver Kami Jensen finished with a personal best 360.20 points to take home third place, but moved up the PHS Wall of Fame to fifth place all-time.

“Sheridan has very strong divers and we are thankful that they wanted to do an 11 dive competition,” Smartt said.

Swimming events in Sheridan were in meters for the second and final time this season for the Panthers.

“This was our first competition with 4A Sheridan in more than seven years,” Smartt said.

Individual winners on the day were Grace Sapp in the 200 IM (2:52.88) and the 100 back (1:14.34); Kik Hayano in the 200 free (2:28.96); Emma Mitchell in the 50 free (29.03) and Kaitlin Diver in the 400 free (5:13.03).

PHS also walked away with two relay race wins: Gabby Paterson, Paige Thomas, Hayano and Mitchell won the 200 free relay (2:01.26) and Hayano, Paterson, Diver and Sapp won the 400 free relay (4:33.70).

“Our strategy was to win two of the three A and B relays,” Smartt said. “Mission accomplished.”

Making a short overnight trip to Buffalo, PHS got a good sense of how the conference meet will play out in just two weeks’ time when the Panthers head back to Buffalo. The Panthers competed against three other 3A North Conference teams and 4A Natrona County.

Powell finished in first place as a team, 60 points ahead of Cody in second.

Returning back to competing in yards, event winners were Mitchell in the 50 free (25.81) and 100 breast (1:13.9); Hayano in the 100 free (59.3) and Sapp in the 100 back (1:04.8).

The winning relay for the Panthers was the 200 medley (2:00.23) composed of Sapp, Mitchell, Thomas and Paterson.

PHS returns home for its final home meet of the season on Thursday, hosting a quad with Cody, Worland and Buffalo.

The meet will begin at 5 p.m. at the Powell Aquatic Center and will honor the Panther seniors.
