Panther swim, dive team adds three new qualifiers

Senior night tonight

A pair of tough competitions had the Powell High School swim and dive team in Cody and Lander over the weekend — defeating Worland and Cody in a triangular before heading to the Bruce Gresly Invite in Lander where the Panthers finished ninth as a team.

CODY TRIANGULAR

The week kicked off early on Thursday, heading to Cody to take part in a triangular against Worland and Cody where the Panthers defeated the Warriors 168-133 and the Broncs 160-140.

Overall the Panthers had four individual event winners, led by Rui Parker who won the 200 free (2:04.33) and the 100 free (53.48); Gabe Rose in the 200 IM (2:21.9) and Jon Hawley in diving (213.15).

Powell added three new qualifiers on the day, with Nathan Dupont earning qualifying marks in the 50 free (25.61) and the 100 fly (1:08.43); newcomer Adam Williams in the 50 free (25.52) and the 100 back (1:06.16) and Connor Mayes in the 100 fly (1:07.52).

Williams, a junior, made the transition over to the swimming program after starting the first month of the season with the PHS basketball team.

“When Adam was in middle school he swam the 100 back in a high school qualifying time,” coach Stephanie Warren said. “We knew he was always good at swimming but he wanted to try basketball.”

Warren said Williams continued to swim on his own outside of other sports and came in with a strong swimming background to make a quick transition.

The Panthers also had top three finishes from Kobus Diver in the 500 free (5:32.91) and Ashtin Prentiss in diving (179.6).

LANDER INVITE

After the triangular on Thursday, the Panthers made the trip down to Lander to take part in the Bruce Gresly Invite against nearly all of the 3A competition except Douglas and Newcastle — facing off with 3A alongside some 4A teams in attendance.

The top finisher for the Panthers was Parker in the 100 fly (57.60) who placed fifth overall.

At the meet the divers were able to take part in the first 11-dive meet of the season, but Warren felt it was not indicative of the Panthers abilities at 11 dives in a chaotic setting.

“I wish I could say that was an accurate picture of what it really looks like,” Warren said. “There’s more than 200 people walking around, one person trying to dive alongside whistles blowing and timers beeping.”

Warren said that there were more than 200 swimmers at the meet, with divers competing simultaneously with the swimming events over the course of four hours.

Overall for the meet the Panthers had five top 10 finishes, with Williams, Parker, Diver and Rose being the four PHS swimmers to place in the top 10.

Lander ran away with the team competition, finishing with 291 points — 67 ahead of second place Buffalo.

SENIOR NIGHT

Powell hosts a meet for the final time this season on Tuesday (tonight), a triangular with Cody and Worland set to start at 5 p.m.

The night will feature a senior night celebration, sending off the Panthers before they head to the Gillette Invite, which serves as a pre-state meet on Friday and Saturday.
