For the first time of 2020, PHS girls’ swim and dive didn’t place first at an event. But the Panthers still performed well in their latest competition on Friday, placing second as a team.

At the varsity meet in Worland, the Panthers finished second of three teams, behind Green River and ahead of Worland. Green River placed second at 4A state a year ago, but due to decreased enrollment, the Wolves now compete in 3A and are a favorite to win state.

Powell won four of the 12 events at the meet. Winners included Elizabeth Liggett (200 free), Emma Mitchell (50 free), Emma Karhu (1-meter six dives) and the relay team of Mitchell, Lucia Harder, Madison Lowery and Liggett in the 200 free relay. Mitchell’s time of 26.06 in the 50 free was a personal-best and earned her the fifth spot on the PHS wall of fame.

PHS added two new state qualifiers on Friday. Gabby Paterson swam a 1:02.3 in the 100 free, and Kylie Kahl earned a spot in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:11.8.

The team also logged 16 new personal-best times. Rebekah Hendershot (50 free and 100 backstroke) and Aubree Fisher (100 free and 100 breaststroke) achieved double PRs.

Head coach Bob Smartt said this was a good opportunity for PHS to gain experience competing against Green River, as they will go up against the Wolves again at conference.

Before that, Powell will host  a triangular at the Powell Aquatic Center at around 4 p.m on Thursday.
