Panther girls’ track wins third straight regional title

Three-peat.

For the third consecutive time the Panthers girls track team won the 3A West Regional track championship as they ran away from the competition — winning the meet by 41 points over second place Mountain View.

The third consecutive title, coupled with the boys’ team victory, marked the first time under head coach Scott Smith that both Panthers tracksters won the regional championship the same year.

“It was fantastic for the girls to continue with their third regional championship in a row,” Smith said.

Overall the Panthers had four individual event victories, in addition to strong depth, to help pace the scoring.

The Panthers battled elements for two days. Sustained winds on Friday were measured from 30 to 50 miles per hour as a headwind or crosswind. That continued on Saturday but the wind did calm down to around 25 to 35 miles per hour.

Senior Jenna Hillman led the way for the Panthers, as she won the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.92 and the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.27.

Hillman also placed second in the 400 with a time of 1:00.86.

“I think (this weekend) she [Hillman] learned what many of us have already known, she is a tough kid and a vicious competitor,” Smith said.

Junior Sydney Spomer helped the Panthers gain valuable points in the triple jump, as she won the competition with a leap of 33 feet, 9 1/2 inches.

Senior Reagan Thompson was the other event winner as she won the shot put with a toss of 36 feet, 4 1/2 inches.

Sophomore Waycee Harvey contributed strongly in her events, as she finished just behind Hillman in the 100 and 200 in second place.

Harvey also placed third in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 7 1/2 inches.

Sophomore Addy Thorington tied for second in the high jump, as she reached a state pre-qualifying mark of 4 feet, 11 inches.

Junior Anna Bartholomew placed third in the 800 meters as she finished in a time of 2:29.60 to help lead three Panthers finish in the top seven. (Kenna and Megan Jacobsen finished sixth and seventh.)

Freshman Catelynn Floy placed third in the triple jump as she finished with a distance of 32 feet, 8 1/2 inches.

In total the Panthers had 22 placers in the top eight, in addition to all relays placing in the top four.

All athletes who placed in the top eight at the regional competition or placed on a top four relay team are qualified for the state competition in that event. Athletes who had already prequalified throughout the season are also qualified for the state meet that starts on Thursday in Casper.

STATE MEET

The Panthers now head to the state meet in Casper, as they look to repeat last year’s success and bring home a second consecutive state title.

“It is nice to be in the running for team hardware, but it’s really more exciting to see how many kids we have in position to bring home state medals,” Smith said.

State track is set to kick off at 3 p.m. on Thursday, 9 a.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday. All events take place at Kelly Walsh High School.

A schedule of events can be found on the Wyoming High School Activities Association website.
