Panther girls tennis defeats Cody; boys fall short

Panther tennis welcomed Park County rival Cody to Powell on Tuesday for non-conference matchups, where difficult opponents greeted teams on both sides — with the girls’ team walking away with a 3-2 victory and the boys leaving with a 4-1 defeat.

Senior Chase Anderson got things started for the Panther girls at No. 1 singles, walking away with a straight set victory 6-4, 6-3.

Junior Lachelle Lee won her first set 6-3, before dropping sets two and three 6-2, 6-4.

In what proved to be the longest matchup of the day spanning 2 1/2 hours, seniors Alli Harp and Sydney Hull battled to a victory at No. 1 doubles 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

One of the stronger comebacks on the day came at No. 2 doubles from seniors Hannah Hincks and Alexis Terry. Hincks and Terry came back after losing the first set 6-4, before winning the next two sets 6-2, 6-3.

“It was good to see the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles battle in their matches and come away with wins,” Panther tennis coach Joe Asay said.

Juniors Maya Landwehr and Lucy Whipple lost their matchup at No. 3 doubles 6-2, 6-2.

Junior Cade Queen nearly battled back in his No. 1 singles matchup, after losing his first set 6-3. Queen battled back winning the second set by an identical score but fell short in the final set 7-5.

Freshman Nathan Preator had the lone victory for the Panther boys on the day, winning his matchup in straight sets 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.

“That was one of those matchups where they are pretty evenly matched,” Asay said. “When you can get a win like that and play really good tennis, that was a great match for him [Preator].”

Junior Keegan Hicswa and brother, senior Kalin Hicswa, lost their battle at No. 1 doubles 6-2, 7-5.

Junior Seeger Wormald and sophomore Isaac Stensing dropped a difficult matchup at No. 2 doubles in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

Cody swept the No. 3 doubles matchup, defeating freshmen Ryan Barrus and Taeson Schultz 6-3, 6-4.

NON-CONFERENCE WEEKEND

Powell now gets to take a break before returning to conference action next week, welcoming Rawlins on Saturday to Powell.

“We don’t want to write the results before they happen, but quite often we have success against kids from Rawlins,” Asay said. “We will prepare like we always want to prepare, keep focusing on those aspects of the game we need to work on. If they come out and find they are better than their opponent, then I want them to play that brand of tennis we have worked on and hopefully it will show in the results.”

Matches are set to begin on Saturday at 1 p.m.
