The Powell girls have been haunted by turnovers and slow starts all season. The regional basketball tournament in Lyman served up more of the same.

The Panthers lost 46-30 to Mountain View in Thursday’s opener and fell again Friday to the Lander Tigers, 47-18, to end the young team’s season.

“Obviously we wanted to see more success than we did in the postseason,” said Panther head coach Chelsea Buher, “but I’m proud of the girls for never giving up. It’s easy to quit when things get tough, but these girls continued to work hard all season long. The adversity these girls went through this year will do nothing but make them stronger in the future.”

The Panthers finished their season with a 3-18 record.

Buher said her three seniors — Kortny Feller, Sidney O’Brien and Sabrina Shoopman — “will have so much success because they weren’t quitters.”

“It would’ve been really easy for them to look at this season and know we weren’t probably going to have a lot of success when looking at our win/loss record, but they decided to stick it out and get stronger as individuals and as a team,” Buher said. “Sometimes losses are better than wins, because you are able to learn so much more.”

Mountain View 46, Powell 30

The Buffalos parlayed a ponderous start by the Panthers on Thursday into leads of 17-4 at the end of the first period and 27-13 at intermission.

Rose Graft made double figures with 10 points on four field goals from two and 2-2 on free throws. Maddie Campbell added seven.

Powell shot 12-43 (28%) from the field and 5-7 at the line. The Panthers did themselves no favors with 30 turnovers against eight steals. Rebounds were 28 for the Panthers, nine on the offensive end. Kami Jensen blocked two Mountain View shots.

Lander 47, Powell 18

The Panther girls ran head-long into Lander during the regular season without success and were unable to solve the tall and talented Tigers again Friday in their second regional game.

No Panther scored more than Campbell’s five points in a game that saw just eight first-half points and 10 in the second half for Powell.

By comparison, Lander’s quarter scores were 11, 13, 8 and 15. The Panthers got one 3-pointer each from the senior/freshman duo of Feller and Campbell and hit 43% (6-14) of their free throws. The squad made 3 of 17 attempts (18%) from 2-point range.

Buher’s charges pulled down 27 rebounds of which five came under their own offensive glass. Turnovers against the Tigers totaled 27.

No stats were posted by the Lander coaching staff.

“I had such a great group of girls that always got along and worked hard together,” coach Buher said. “I’ll miss our three seniors, Kortny [Feller], Sidney [O’Brien] and Sabrina [Shoopman] and I wish them nothing but luck in their future endeavors and will always be here for anything they need.”
