Panther boys bring home historic regional title

History has been made.

For the first time under head coach Scott Smith the Panthers boys and girls won the 3A West Regional title, as the Panther boys’ track team won the competition in Kemmerer just ahead of second place Mountain View by 12.50 points.

For two days the team battled the elements, facing headwinds and crosswinds that exceeded 25 miles per hour both days — using three individual victories mixed with depth to help propel the team to victory.

Senior Zach Ratcliff led the way for the Panthers, as he pulled off a double in the jumping events, winning both the long jump and triple jump.

In the long jump Ratcliff pulled out the victory by just one-half an inch over Brock Douzenis from Worland. Ratcliff jumped 19 feet, 11 1/4 inches to capture the crown.

In the triple jump Ratcliff won by just 1 inch, as he jumped 39 feet, 10 inches, to capture the crown over Wyatt Jensen from Mountain View.

“It was great to see him pull that off,” Smith said. “It was a big upset in the triple, as he set a personal record by over 2 feet in the 30 to 40 miles per hour winds that knocked most kids down quite a bit.”

The other individual victory for the Panthers came in the high jump, as senior Eli Weimer won the event, clearing 6 feet, 2 inches, just ahead of sophomore teammate Isaiah Woyak, who placed second.

The Panthers picked up significant points in the throwing events, as seniors Toran Graham, Sheldon Shoopman and Lane Shramek placed second through fourth to help lead the way.

Sheldon Shoopman also placed second in the discus, with Graham close behind in third.

“Getting all four of our entered kids to place in the boys’ hurdles, triple jump, shot put and high jump really pile up the points fast,” Smith said.

The Panthers added more qualifiers in the hurdles, as sophomore Stuart Shoopman placed fourth and junior Simon Shoopman placed fifth respectively. Weimer and junior Hyrum Jeide placed sixth and seventh in the hurdles.

Junior Daniel Merritt battled the elements to place top five in all of the distance events, as he finished third in the 1600, fourth in the 800 and fifth in the 3200.
