The Wyoming High School Activities Association is expected to make a decision on fall sports in the near future — and according to Powell High School activities director Scott McKenzie, the outlook is “favorable.”
The exact plans on health and attendance protocols and competition dates have not been unveiled to the public yet. But if all goes according to plan, football, volleyball, golf, tennis, cross country and girls’ swimming will begin practices in the coming weeks.
This comes in the wake of some other states — such as Virginia and California — announcing limitations and cancellations to their 2020 fall high school sports seasons amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Earlier this month, the Casper Star-Tribune reported that the WHSAA had seven contingency plans in place for the high school football season. WHSAA Commissioner Ron Laird told the paper that he felt it was imperative for officials and administrators to do what they can to ensure there’s a fall season.
While saying he wasn’t sure exactly how things would look, “our plan right now is to start everything on time,” Laird said.
Last month, the WHSAA Board of Directors tentatively scheduled an Aug. 3 meeting to “come together and reschedule any of the fall events that need adjusted.” However, depending on what public health restrictions are in place at that point, “the meeting may not be needed,” board minutes say.
