Sydney Prather

A recent Northwest College graduate is headed north to continue her basketball career.

Sydney Prather signed a letter of intent with Montana State University — Northern last week, becoming the first NWC women’s basketball player to sign with a four-year school this year. Located in Havre, Montana, MSUN is an NAIA program that competes in the Frontier Conference. 

Prather played one season for the Trappers, averaging 8.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game and earning a spot on the NJCAA Region IX All-Region Team. Before that, she played one season for Gillette College.

Originally from Big Timber, Montana, Prather couldn’t turn down an offer to play at a strong program in her home state. 

“I really like how it’s closer to home,” Prather said. “And I connected well with the team and coaches. I could tell how much of a family they were, and that’s important to me. They all have a competitive drive that matches mine.”

Before officially becoming a Skylight, Prather will look to hone in on every aspect of her game. 

“My basketball IQ overall will for sure improve,” Prather said. “This summer I’m going to work hard on getting stronger and faster, as well as my ball handling skills and getting my shot back.”

MSUN finished the 2020-21 season 7-14,  posting a 5-10 record in league play. If Prather fulfills her goals as a basketball player and leader, she is convinced she can improve the program’s trajectory. 

“I want to become a better leader and reach my full potential,” Prather said. 

NWC women’s basketball coach Camden Levett said that Prather “found a perfect fit.”

“Havre is a basketball town that embraces hard-working, tough-nosed kids,” the coach said. “That’s Syd to a tee!”
