With the midterm election upon us, one thing is clear, we disagree on a lot of things. How much money to spend, who should get said money, or a variety of social issues that I would love to dig into, but this is neither the time nor the place. So the question is, is it right for the Christian to engage in the body politic? And if so to what degree? I will argue that yes, we should be active in addressing the ills of our society through the mechanisms that God has established. Here in the United States, He has established a government for the people and by the people, thus as providentially placed citizens of this land we should go about seeking to do good. Part of this is seeking to put into positions of authority those who seek to uphold the law of the land and maintain peace, and in all instances pray for those who govern, see 1 Timothy 2: 1-3.

With that said, what I want every Christian to keep an eye on is where on the list of priorities is the election and function of federal, state and local government. Speaking as one who at various times was overly engaged, it is easy to lose sight of where our real hope is found. Far too often we seek temporal solutions to eternal problems and wickedness in the land is no temporal problem, it needs an eternal solution. When we seek permanent deliverance from temporal hands we become discouraged because we have lost sight of where our true and only hope is. It is not in this election and if a D or an R gets into office, but our hope is established in the one who is at the right hand of the Father and will one day, hopefully soon, return. So, seek to do good through the government God has placed you under, however, in our hearts and in our minds we need to live by the old Revolutionary War saying, “No king but King Jesus.”
