The Powell High School chapter of the National Honors Society (NHS) welcomed a group of new members Monday night and recognized existing members with awards.

Nineteen students were inducted into the chapter for the 2022-23 school year: Isabella, Bertagnole, Amiya DeFoe Love, Allie Gilliatt, Jonathan Hawley, Keegan Hicswa, Sydney Hull, Jacob Orr, Cade Queen, Matthew Wantulok, Seeger Wormald, Aramonie Brinkerhoff, Chance Franks, Isabella Gomez, Kiyoko Hayano, Brynn Hillman, Emma Johnson, Elizabeth Peterson, Aidan Wantulok and Lucy Whipple.

“I believe that they will live up to the characteristics of the National Honors Society,” NHS adviser Tammy Schiermeister said.

In order to be inducted students need to maintain a GPA of at least 3.5, have a history of community service, display leadership in their community and school, and be involved in extracurricular activities.

NHS President Jace Bohlman was recognized as the senior with the highest community service hours of 112 hours and 30 minutes. At 62 hours and 15 minutes, Anna Bartholomew was recognized as the junior with the highest number of community service hours.

“I would say that NHS overall is a good way to find different opportunities to get involved with volunteering and that’s something that you can really take into your future in college or in whatever career that you want to go into,” Bohlman said.
