Multimedia presentation on Timor-Leste set for April 4 at Northwest College Intercultural House

Posted

Explore the little-known Southeast Asian country of Timor-Leste with a multimedia presentation at the NWC Intercultural House on Tuesday, April 4 at noon. The presentation features an overview of the country’s history, culture, and education system along with a special musical performance. A traditional lunch will also be served, and the event is free and open to the public.

Leading the presentation is Northwest College student Aprilia “Lia” Carmone Maria Jose de Jesus, who is studying at NWC through the United States Timor-Leste (USTL) Scholarship Program. She is the first student to attend the college through that program, which provides full scholarships for two to four years of study at high-quality undergraduate degree institutions in the United States. The awards include full tuition toward either a bachelor’s or associate degree, travel, living stipends, medical insurance in the U.S., and visa costs. The USTL is a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs with the U.S. Department of State.

The nation of Timor-Leste is located less than 400 nautical miles north of Australia and comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, with the western half administered by Indonesia. It became independent in 2002.
