The Monument Hill Road northwest of Cody has opened to vehicles for the summer. Park County officials said Tuesday that the road is “rough but passable.”

“At this time, there has been no maintenance grading done, but will be complete when time and conditions allow,” county officials said.

Officially known as County Road 7UH, the route provides access to public lands west of Wyo. Highway 120. The road is open to travelers on foot, horseback or ATVs all year. However, during the winter and spring, it’s closed to vehicles beginning about 1.6 miles west of the highway.

Road 7UH ends at a junction about 9 miles from Wyo. Highway 120. An agreement between Park County and Trail Creek Ranch — which surrounds much of the western part of the road — provides public access beyond that point, but with some restrictions.

“Please respect the private property in the area to protect against further closures from deteriorating conditions and misuse of the access,” the Park County Engineer’s Office said in Tuesday’s news release.

The Red Grade Road is a two-track that heads southwest of the junction; it accesses state land and the Shoshone National Forest. Foot, horseback and ATV traffic is allowed year-round but motor vehicles are only allowed when Road 7UH is open.

The Bureau of Land Management Forest Products Road, meanwhile, heads more south from the junction with Road 7UH and accesses BLM land. It’s open to noncommercial foot and horseback travel year-round, but people can only drive if they are collecting firewood with a permit or if they are elderly or physically disabled hunters and have a special permit from the county.

The other roads near the junction — known as the Bell Survey Road, North Road and Old Two Track Road — are closed to the public.

“It is the public’s responsibility to know which road and what restrictions apply to the various roads in this area,” county officials said.
