Former Powell resident Mildred Lindsay Chappell, 76, passed away Aug. 14, 2019, at St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Nampa, Idaho. She was surrounded by family.
Born May 8, 1943, in Lovell, Wyoming, the third child of DeLyle B and D. Olive (Dutcher) Lindsay, she grew to adulthood in nearby Byron on the family farm. She attended elementary and high school in Byron where she learned to play the clarinet. This talent helped her earn scholarships to both Northwest Community College and the University of Wyoming.
After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from UW in 1965, she taught in Casper, Wyoming, and later in Washington state, where she met her husband Davis Ray Chappell. The couple married on March 31, 1967, and later divorced.
The young couple returned to Wyoming and settled in Powell, where the remaining four of their six children were born. The family relocated once more to Basin and after six years there, she moved her family once again to Powell where she worked as a bookkeeper for many years.
After recovering from a serious illness, she joined her daughters Denice, Teri and Racheal in Utah. They cared for her over the next 18 years as her health continued to decline, with Racheal serving as her primary caregiver. She survived a brief battle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma, she also suffered from the effects of diabetes which took the use of her kidneys. She underwent dialysis treatments for 17 years, where she made many friends.
She spent the last year of her life in Oregon with her other daughter, Rebecca and her family.
A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served for many years as ward chorister and teacher in Relief Society. She enjoyed serving others and did so by sharing her love of handicrafts and cooking. She was well loved and a friend to many.
She is survived by her six children: Denice, Rebecca Long (David), Racheal, DeLyle, Davis Ray (Cathy) and Teri; her 10 grandchildren; sisters Martha O’Banion, and Evelyn (Allen) Binns, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother L. Carl Lindsay, sister-in-law Louise Lindsay and brother-in-law Ralph O’Banion.
Her mortal remains will be interned at Valley View Cemetery in Vale, Oregon.
