Middle school boys sweep first meet

A strong home crowd helped inspire strong performances in the season’s first middle school track meet, as Powell’s seventh and eighth grade boys ran away from the competition. The Cubs won both team titles on Saturday to kick off their year.

First place finishers for the seventh graders included: Breckyn Kobbe who won the 100 meters with a time of 13.22 and the 400 meters with a 1:00.86; the 4x100 relay team of Kobbe, Brady Harvey, Lincoln Crawford and Austin Cook won with a time of 52.12; and the 4x200 medley relay team of Hayden Jensen, Kaden Wolff, Braxton Munsinger and Dayton Lawrence, who won with a time of 2:11.51.

Cook also took second in the 100 meters with a time of 13.34, second in the high jump by clearing 4 feet, 8 inches, second in the long jump with a jump of 15 feet, 3 3/4 inches, and third in the 200 with a time of 28.40 seconds. Kobbe took second in the 200 meters with a 27.22 and Crawford placed second in the 200 meter hurdles with a 33.02 and second in the triple jump with a jump of 28 feet, 9 inches. Kason Sherman placed third in the triple jump with a jump of 28 feet, 5 inches, and Wolff took third in the shot put with a throw of 26 feet, 6 1/2 inches.

For the eighth grade boys, Darren Smith won the 400 with a time of 1:00.34, the 4x200 medley relay team of Smith, Mason Coombs, Dayton Menuey and Shane Kirkpatrick won with a time of 2:00.7, and the 4x400 relay team of Kirkpatrick, Josh Pfeifer, Thomas Shuman and Korbyn Warren won with a time of 4:11.73.

Other top placers included Caden Nelson, who took second in the 200 meters with a time of 26.61 seconds, second in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 1 1/2 inches, and second in the triple jump with a jump of 35 feet, 10 1/2 inches. Warren took second in the 1600 meters with a 5:18.31 and third in the 800 meters with a 2:27.84, Nathan Preator took second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.49, second in the 200 hurdles with a 30.32, third in the high jump by clearing 5 feet, and third in the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet, 3 inches. Taeson Schultz placed second in the high jump by clearing 5 feet.

“It was a great way to start the season,” Cubs head coach Zach Coombs said. “Nathan [Preator] and Thomas [Shuman] had great days for the eighth grade Cubs, while Breckyn [Kobbe] and Austin [Cook] helped propel the seventh grade to victory. Both teams had a lot of great performances by numerous athletes.”

The Cubs will head on the road Saturday as they travel to Riverton to take on teams from Riverton, Lander and Mountain View to see where they stand.
