Two of the Panther girls’ three wins this basketball season have come at the expense of Lovell, but the Bulldogs struck back hard Friday night.
Playing in the friendly confines of the Lovell gym, the Bulldogs took the measure of the Powell High School girls, 40-18.
Powell’s offense produced just four points each in the first three periods and six in the final eight minutes. The Bulldogs didn’t fare much better with only 14 points of their own at halftime, where they led 14-8. However, Lovell (4-15 overall, 2-4 in Class 3A Northwest) righted its ship and put up a dozen points in the third, then followed with 14 in the fourth to pull away.
The top Panther scorer was Rose Graft, who put up six points.
Powell got a three from Madi Fields, a pair of 2-pointers each from Graft and Hailee Hyde and one by Sabrina Shoopman. Paije Johnson was held to a pair of free throws and Kortney Feller hit one.
“We didn’t shoot the ball well,” said PHS head coach Chelsea Buher. “We had a good defensive game plan, but when you are shooting about 15% from the field, there aren’t many games you can win.”
Buher added that Lovell is playing well right now, recently playing quadrant-leading Worland to within 10 points and crafting an upset of second-place Lander.
The Panther girls (3-16 overall, 1-5 in 3A Northwest) will face Mountain View on Thursday at Lyman to open the 3A West Regional Tournament. Also, in the field are Lander, Lovell, Worland, Pinedale, Lyman and Big Piney.
To punch their ticket to next week’s state tournament, the Panthers will need to win two games before losing two at this weekend’s regional competition, which runs through Saturday.
Mountain View, with a 15-6 overall record, is the No. 1 seed from 3A’s southwest quadrant.
“We’ve not matched up [with Mountain View] this year,” Buher said, “but I’ve kept an eye on scores through common opponents.”
“We will have to come ready to play, but even though they are the one seed on their side, I feel like there is an opportunity for us if we play the way I know we can play,” Buher said. “We have to control our turnovers, box out and not have too many empty possessions offensively.”
She added that, “I know my girls will fight and will leave it all out there on the floor.”
Lovell 40, Powell 18
Powell — Graft 6, Hyde 4, Fields 3, Shoopman 2, Johnson 2, Feller 1.
