Lone Star Fire spreads

Yellowstone National Park officials are predicting the Lone Star Fire will get worse in the coming weeks. The fire has increased to 3,346 acres and continues to spread despite recent cold, wet weather, park officials said Wednesday.

Warm, dry weather is forecasted for the Yellowstone area in September. And after hard frosts over the Labor Day holiday weekend killed vegetation — creating additional fuel — fire activity is expected to increase.

The fire is located near Lone Star Geyser, about 3 miles south of Old Faithful.

Firefighters plan to continue cutting trees and heavy vegetation around the Old Faithful area to protect power lines, historic buildings, and communication equipment. The efforts are expected to protect the Old Faithful area if Lone Star Fire shifts suddenly or another wildfire threatens it in the future.

The Grand Loop Road between Old Faithful and West Thumb is open but may be closed at any time due to smoke and low visibility, park officials warned. Trails and campsites in the Shoshone Lake and Lone Star Geyser area are closed.

The fire was caused by lightning on Saturday, Aug. 22 and was being fought by 42 firefighters on Wednesday.
