Each of the 15 athletes with the Powell Masters Special Olympics team brought home a medal or ribbon from the 2019 Special Olympics Wyoming Fall Tournament in Casper.

“They did wonderful there,” said Laura Thormahlen, who serves on the committee for the local team. “They all really enjoyed it.”

In the bowling competition, Powell athletes Frank Cropanese and Willow Hagstrom won gold for unified doubles bowling, while Rob Wenstrom and Mike Myers took silver. Bowling duo Shelby Bricker and MaryKate Herrera received bronze medals.

In the individual bowling competition, Troy Edwards earned a gold medal.

Bowler Morgan Preuninger earned the bronze in the ramp category.

Teammates Jerry Nation and Richard Burbank brought home fourth place ribbons in the doubles category.

In the individual bowling (ramp assisted) competition, Megan Nicholson and Ryan Kennedy each received silver medals while Gene Snyder brought home the bronze.

In cycling, Garion Collins won gold medals in the 10K and 5K road races, and took silver in the 2K time trial.

The Powell Masters athletes competed in bowling and track at last month’s tournament in Casper.

The adult team includes 15 athletes, ranging in age from 21 to mid-50s, Thormahlen said.

“It is inspiring to see these guys,” she said.

Some of the athletes are with Northern Inc. or Big Horn Enterprises, while others live with their guardians or on their own.

With the support and partnerships of local agencies, the Powell Masters compete at the summer and fall state games.

“We just want them to have a good time and be able to compete,” Thormahlen said. “They get to make a lot of friends from all over the state and get to see them again and again.”

The athletes and team leaders also appreciate the community’s help.

“There’s so much support in Powell,” Thormahlen said.

Recently, the Tip A Cop event — hosted by the Powell Police Department and Park County Sheriff’s Office — raised money for Special Olympics Wyoming.

This weekend, the Powell Masters team will host a Casino Night fundraiser. The event takes place from 4-8 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Hall, 143 S. Clark St. in Powell.

While attendees can’t gamble for real money, they can win raffle tickets, and there will be drawings for multiple prizes. In addition, the fundraiser will include a taco/nacho bar, 50/50 raffle and silent auction with a variety of items from local donors.

“A lot of businesses have contributed so much,” Thormahlen said.

In addition, the Special Olympics team has received support from the American Legion and Powell Rotary Club and local residents.

“Powell is such a great community to live in,” Thormahlen said.

Casino Night tickets are $15/individual, $25/couple and $50/family. If you purchase a ticket in advance, you receive $15 free in poker chips to play the casino games.

Advance tickets can be purchased by contacting Thormahlen at lthormahlen.northern@gmail.com or 307-202-1729.
