Libraries work to preserve our stories

Our society commemorates and celebrates together. We blow out birthday candles; we shoot off fireworks; we mark time. Sometimes it is fun and sometimes it is with sorrow and respect. This year has brought the 75th anniversary of the landing at Normandy, the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 flight, and the 30th anniversary of the Berlin Wall coming down. Locally, the Stampede Rodeo saw its 100th year and on Dec. 10 we will see the 150th anniversary of women being able to vote in Wyoming. Each event holds an echo with it that reverberates throughout our collective timeline.

Each of us in turn then has our insulated bubble of moments that mark our own personal timeline. Our birth, graduation, wedding, etc., set definitive dates that we can reflect upon and recall specific memories. Those around us snap a picture, shoot a video, or remember an anecdote. It begins to form our life’s story. Some of us journal our story, some of us Facebook our story, and some of us write what we know into something greater than ourselves.

Your librarians watch over these individuals every day. Their imaginations put to paper create the books, movies and music to which we hold dear. Your librarians purchase without bias, and we serve our community with diligence. The taxpayers of Park County can hold their heads up proudly when they speak of their libraries knowing that all care is given to preserve history while forging boldly into the future. We are proud to be the stewards of these many stories, including yours.

Stop in to see us, talk to us and enjoy your library. We are ready to help add a moment to your story.
